About Purple cabbage
・紫キャベツ(むらさききゃべつ)
・Murasaki kyabetsu
・Red cabbage
・Murasaki = Purple
Although the English name for this vegetable is “Red cabbage,” it actually has a more purplish hue. This is why it is called “purple cabbage” in Japanese.
Purple cabbage introduced to Japan during the Edo period(1603~1868), it was initially enjoyed as an ornamental plant, but it began to be used as food around the Meiji era (1868~1912).
While it has become a familiar vegetable in Japan, it is rarely used in traditional Japanese cuisine.
