About German pottato

ジャーマンポテト(じゃーまんぽてと)
・Japanese “German fries”

German potato  is a popular dish in Japanese Western cuisine. This dish is similar to German fries or Bratkartoffeln. In german potato, the potatoes are usually cut into bite-sized chunks or wedges. In Bratkartoffeln, on the other hand, the potatoes are typically thinly sliced to a thickness of 2-3mm.
You can find it on the side dish menu at most izakayas and supermarkets in Japan.

【Why? “German”?】The dish was named “German Potato” because it is a potato dish and goes well with beer, both of which are associated with Germany. It is unclear who came up with the name.

Not just beer – it’s also perfect for sake!
